Understanding Fabric GSM: A Practical Guide to Fabric Weight

When you're choosing fabric for a sewing project, colours and patterns might catch our eyes first, but fabric weight can make just as much difference to the finished result.

A lightweight cotton lawn and a sturdy cotton canvas may both be made from cotton, but they'll behave very differently when you cut, sew and wear them. One of the most useful ways of describing this difference is GSM.

GSM stands for grams per square metre and is a measurement of fabric weight. Understanding it can help you compare fabrics, choose something suitable for your project and get a better idea of how a fabric might behave before you buy it.

What Does GSM Mean in Fabric?

GSM simply tells you how much one square metre of a fabric weighs.

For example, a fabric described as 150 GSM weighs 150 grams per square metre, while a 350 GSM fabric weighs 350 grams per square metre.

As a general rule, a lower GSM indicates a lighter fabric and a higher GSM indicates a heavier one.

GSM is particularly useful when buying fabric online because you can't pick up the fabric and feel its weight for yourself. It gives you another piece of information to use alongside the fibre content, weave or knit, drape and description.

However, GSM shouldn't be considered in isolation. Two fabrics with the same GSM can still look, feel and behave very differently.

What Is Considered Lightweight, Medium Weight or Heavyweight Fabric?

There isn't a single universal definition of lightweight, medium weight and heavyweight fabric. Different manufacturers, retailers and fabric types use slightly different ranges.

At LifeCraft Studio, we use the following broad guide:

Fabric weight GSM Typical characteristics
Lightweight Under 150 GSM Fine, light and often more fluid or delicate
Medium weight 150–300 GSM Versatile, with more body and substance
Heavyweight Over 300 GSM Substantial, structured or dense

These categories are intended as a useful starting point rather than a rigid rule. The way a fabric behaves is just as important as the number on the scales.

Lightweight Fabrics: Under 150 GSM

Lightweight fabrics tend to feel fine and relatively light in the hand. Depending on their construction and fibre content, they may be soft and flowing or crisp and airy.

Examples include:

  • Cotton lawn and voile
  • Lightweight viscose
  • Chiffon and georgette
  • Lightweight lining fabrics
  • Fine silks and silk-like fabrics
  • Some lightweight jerseys

These fabrics can work particularly well for blouses, summer dresses, flowing skirts, lightweight tops and garments designed to have movement. Many of these weights can be found in in our range of pre-loved dressmaking fabrics, including one-off fabrics suitable for dresses, tops and skirts.

Some lightweight fabrics can be sheer or semi-sheer, so you may want to consider adding a lining fabric, depending on the garment and the finish you want.

They can also require a little more care when cutting and sewing because very fine or slippery fabrics may shift or distort more easily.

Medium Weight Fabrics: 150–300 GSM

Medium weight is a broad category and includes many of the fabrics commonly used for everyday dressmaking and sewing.

Depending on their construction, fabrics within this range might include:

  • Cotton poplin
  • Medium weight linen
  • Twill
  • Denim
  • Ponte and heavier jerseys
  • Some wool and wool-blend fabrics
  • Medium weight furnishing fabrics

Medium weight fabrics often offer a useful balance between drape and structure, although this varies considerably from one fabric to another.

They can be suitable for everything from dresses and trousers to skirts, jackets, bags, cushions and other home sewing projects.

This is also why GSM alone can't tell you what a fabric should be used for. A soft 200 GSM viscose twill and a crisp 200 GSM cotton fabric may weigh the same but produce very different results.

Heavyweight Fabrics: Over 300 GSM

Fabrics above approximately 300 GSM tend to feel more substantial and may provide greater structure, warmth or durability.

Examples can include:

  • Heavy denim
  • Canvas
  • Upholstery fabrics
  • Heavy wool and coating fabrics
  • Thick tweeds
  • Some curtain and furnishing fabrics

These fabrics can be useful for coats, jackets, bags, structured garments, cushions, upholstery and other projects where strength or body is important.

Very heavy fabrics can require different sewing techniques and equipment. You may need a stronger needle, heavier thread or a sewing machine capable of handling several layers at seams and hems.

Does a Higher GSM Mean Better Quality?

No. A higher GSM simply means that the fabric weighs more per square metre.

It doesn't tell you whether a fabric is better made, more durable or more suitable for your particular project.

A beautifully made lightweight fabric may be far better suited to a summer blouse than a much heavier fabric. Equally, a lightweight fabric isn't automatically delicate, and a heavyweight fabric isn't automatically hard-wearing.

Quality depends on a combination of factors including the fibres used, yarn quality, fabric construction, finish and condition.

The important question isn't "Which GSM is best?" but "Which fabric has the right characteristics for what I want to make?"

GSM and Drape Aren't the Same Thing

It's easy to assume that lightweight fabrics will always be drapey and heavyweight fabrics will always be stiff, but this isn't necessarily the case.

Weight describes how heavy the fabric is. Drape describes how the fabric falls and moves.

A fabric can be relatively heavy but still have a soft, fluid drape. Another fabric of a similar weight might be crisp and structured.

This distinction matters particularly in dressmaking.

A pattern designed for a flowing fabric may not work as intended in a stiff fabric, even if its GSM appears suitable. Likewise, a structured garment can lose its shape if made from something too fluid.

When choosing fabric, look at GSM and drape together, rather than relying on either measurement alone.

Fibre Content Matters Too

Fibre content also influences how a fabric feels and behaves.

Cotton, linen, viscose, polyester and wool fabrics of similar weights can have very different properties. They may vary in warmth, breathability, stretch, softness, crease resistance and drape.

The construction of the fabric matters as well. A knitted fabric behaves differently from a woven fabric, while different weaves can create very different characteristics even when similar fibres are used.

That's why our fabric descriptions include as much useful information as we can about each piece, rather than relying on GSM alone.

How to Use GSM When Choosing Fabric Online

Think of GSM as one part of the fabric's overall description.

When you're deciding whether a fabric is suitable for a project, consider:

  • Weight/GSM – is it broadly light, medium or heavy enough?
  • Drape – does it flow or hold its shape?
  • Fibre content – how is it likely to feel, wear and behave?
  • Construction – is it woven or knitted, loose or densely constructed?
  • Stretch – does your pattern require stretch?
  • Opacity – will the garment or project need lining?
  • Intended use – does the fabric have the right combination of properties for what you're making?

If you're working from a commercial sewing pattern, check the suggested fabrics on the pattern envelope or instructions. These are often more useful than looking for a particular GSM alone because they indicate the type of drape and structure the designer intended.

How We Estimate Fabric GSM at LifeCraft Studio

Because our fabrics are pre-loved and sourced from makers' homes, they don't always arrive with their original labels or manufacturer specifications. That means the original GSM is often unknown.

Rather than relying on how heavy a fabric feels, we estimate its GSM using its actual weight and measurements.

For each piece of fabric, we:

  • Weigh the fabric using digital scales and record its weight in grams.
  • Measure the length and width of the fabric in metres.
  • Calculate the total area of the fabric in square metres by multiplying its length by its width.
  • Divide the fabric's weight by its area to give an estimated weight in grams per square metre.

The calculation is:

GSM = fabric weight in grams ÷ fabric area in square metres

For example, imagine a piece of fabric measures 2 metres long × 1.5 metres wide and weighs 600 grams.

Its area is:

2 m × 1.5 m = 3 m²

Its estimated GSM is therefore:

600 g ÷ 3 m² = 200 GSM

The GSM we provide should be treated as an estimate rather than a laboratory measurement.

Pre-loved fabric pieces aren't always perfectly rectangular, and measurements and domestic digital scales have a small margin of error. Selvedges, uneven cut edges, embroidery, embellishment or variations within the fabric can also affect the calculation.

For sewing purposes, however, calculating GSM from the measured area and weight gives a useful indication of how light or heavy a fabric is and makes it easier to compare different fabrics when shopping online.

We use this information alongside other characteristics such as drape, handle, construction and estimated fibre content to build a fuller picture of how each fabric is likely to behave.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Project

There's no perfect GSM for dressmaking, quilting, home décor or any other type of sewing.

Instead, think about what you need the finished fabric to do.

Does it need to float and move? Hold a crisp shape? Keep you warm? Withstand regular wear? Stretch with the body? Support the structure of a bag or cushion?

GSM can help narrow down your options, but combining weight, drape, fibre, construction and intended use will give you a much better idea of whether a fabric is right for your project.
